PORTABLE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Many faults or damage discovered may seem fairly obvious from a simple visual check but are often not apparent to the user in the workplace on a familiar daily basis. EuroTest inspectors look critically at all electrical equipment and frequently come across damage to plugs and cables such as:

  • damage to cable covering
  • damaged and cracked plugs
  • temporary "repairs" to cable using tape
  • failure of cord grips to hold cable coverings in plugs and equipment.
  • signs of equipment used in unsuitable conditions, e.g. wet or contaminated environment
  • damage to outer casing of equipment
  • evidence of overheating, e.g. burn marks
  • coloured internal cable insulation cores showing where they enter plug
  • bare wire visible
  • wires, including the earth wire, are not attached to the correct terminals
  • loose screws, etc
  • damaged or malfunctioning main on/off switch
