Portable electrical appliances are usually defined as being connected
to the mains power supply with a plug and socket, but this is not
a requirement. Any electrical equipment which is portable or transportable
whether it has a plug/socket or not must be tested. Thus includes
hand held equipment such as hair dryers, and stationary equipment
or appliances which may not be fitted with a carrying handle, such
as a refrigerator or space heater.
It might not be immediately obvious whether an appliance should
be regarded as fixed or portable.
Information technology equipment includes electrical equipment
used in offices, shops, factories, schools, hospitals and public
places, such as computers radio telecommunications equipment, fax
machines, photo copiers, and so on.
The Institution of Electrical Engineers, IEE publish the Code
of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical
Equipment and this is Eurotest's UK basis for Portable Appliance
Testing.
