is not difficult because we are first and foremost electricians
plus we are professionals, providing a UK-wide service. There
are no hidden costs and no unnecessary delays.
How important
is inspection and testing?
The law demands that electrical systems used at
work are safe. It clearly places the responsibility for this on
employers and employees as designated duty holders. You could
find yourself in court over matters you did not realise you have
responsibilities.
Who will
be held responsible for my appliance testing?
The regulations make clear that employers and
the self-employed are liable for the correct use and maintenance
of all portable appliances at the workplace. This includes those
accountable for the management of offices, factories, shops, hospitals,
hotels and all buildings used by the public.
Companies involved in manufacture, repair, hire or resale of electrical
appliances are also legally responsible for the safety of items
they supply and consequently also require portable electrical
testing.
Which
premises are covered for portable appliance testing?
All premises which are accessible to your employees
and any member of the public are covered by the regulations.
Which
portable electrical appliances must be inspected and tested?
Any portable electrical appliance which can be
carried from place to place between periods of use and is connected
to a power supply via a plug connected to a flexible cable is
subject to testing. All portable appliances must be inspected
and tested during their working life.
Who should
inspect and test portable appliances?
Someone who can make judgments at the appropriate
levels of electrical appliance testing, understands the operating
principles of each portable appliance and has adequate knowledge
of the relevant safety standards.
Can I
do it myself?
Electrical inspection and testing is a specialist
subject. It is not a core task for most companies and generates
no income, therefore it is generally regarded as a cost liability.
You will also have to consider emergency lighting systems and
fire alarms.
A competent qualified electrician, already on the payroll, who
understands the operating principles of each portable appliance
and has adequate knowledge of the relevant safety standards, can
perform electrical inspection, testing and produce the certificates.
You will need to consider that the time away from core business
activity by your staff could be serious and overwhelming. Your
staff will always have day-to-day work priorities to focus on
which may compromise their Electricity at Work Regulations responsibilities.
That would potentially cause time-slips, overspending and your
duty holder responsibility will remain internal.
How can
I best contain costs?
Allow your own staff to concentrate precisely on
their own distinct duties and obtain the benefits of engaging
the resources of a quality specialist consultant with extensive
knowledge and experience such as EuroTest.
As well as saving you time, you will externalise the management
of the legal duty holder responsibility.
The operational needs, procedures and specific safety issues of
your industry will be understood and protected throughout by our
on-site management of the inspectors, and with EuroTest's
UK-wide operational capabilities the planning and human resource
deployment is removed from you.
We have a duty to make safe any very dangerous faults or defects
we detect, but EuroTest
have no vested interest in making repairs or in undertaking installation
work, therefore you can use your own suitably qualified staff
or engage sub-contractors as necessary to follow through.
What about
keeping records?
Keeping records up to date is as important as
inspection and testing. EuroTest
provide an excellent database management service which will save
you the problems of storage, time and investment necessary to
produce them yourself. If you operate in a multi-site environment
this is particularly important for you. We can produce your printed
records or by any other means you wish including the Internet.
Do EuroTest
employees carry ID?
All our employees carry company ID and we will
discuss with your own security department any additional requirements.
Our staff are given instruction on our own Code of Conduct which
includes dress appropriate to the location and, of course, safety
training.
